Welcome to Lake Henry

A Local Treasure Hiding in Plain Sight

Nestled in the familiar hills of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Lake Henry remains one of our region’s quietest and most beloved spots. At 310 acres, it’s easy to overlook on the map—but not if you’ve lived here long enough. Depending on who you ask, you might hear it called Maplewood Lake or even Blueberry Lake, especially among seasonal renters and vacation property owners. Add in the postal overlap with Lake Ariel—despite Lake Henry being entirely in Wayne County—and it’s no wonder this place has managed to stay off the radar for so long.

But for those of us who know it well, Lake Henry isn’t just a name—it’s a way of life. Just under 20 miles from Scranton, the lake has remained largely untouched by the intense development that’s reshaped other parts of the Poconos. And that’s just how most of us like it. The lake's charm lies in its quiet waters, rustic cottages, and the community of residents who’ve enjoyed it for generations.

Primarily residential and second in size only to Lake Wallenpaupack, Lake Henry offers all-sports access without losing its peaceful feel. Whether it's water skiing on a summer morning, kayaking through the coves at dusk, or fishing for bass, pickerel, or perch in the northern end, there’s always something to enjoy. Many homes have stood here since the lake was first formed by damming what was once known as Silkmans Pond—named for local businessman and avid angler Henry Silkman. His early fish stocking efforts may still be bearing fruit today.

One of the lake’s more unique features is its floating bog islands, a natural curiosity that’s part of local lore. Anyone who was around when the biggest one broke loose during that storm a few years back remembers the scramble to tow it down toward Stump Pond. It’s the kind of story that gets passed around at campfires and barbecues—and one of the many reasons Lake Henry feels like a place where the community is truly connected.

The Lake Henry Cottagers Association helps preserve the lake’s character and maintains important shared spaces, including the dam and access points. The campground and small resort on the west shore are run privately, but many locals are familiar with their family-friendly activities—outdoor movie nights, music by the fire, kids’ crafts, and even the occasional hot air balloon weekend. These events help keep the sense of community strong, especially during the summer season.

Just east of the lake, State Game Lands 310 offers even more for outdoor enthusiasts: 1,120 acres of open space, walking and riding trails, and prime birdwatching opportunities in the wetlands. Locals know these quiet roads and trails make for great Sunday bike rides or peaceful early morning hikes. Eagles, herons, and other native wildlife are a common sight—especially if you know where to look.

For many of us who live in or near Lake Henry, it’s not just a weekend destination or a dot on the map—it’s part of our everyday landscape. It’s where traditions are passed down, where nature is respected, and where neighbors still know each other by name. Lake Henry might confuse outsiders, but to those of us who call this corner of Pennsylvania home, there’s no mistaking its beauty—or its value.
